Information Centre Stationsplein 7

At Stationsplein 7 you will find an interesting exhibition with numerous scale models, photographs, videos, archaeological finds and a large wall describing the various engineering methods used in building the Noord/Zuidlijn. You can also take part in the various activities that the Information Centre organises throughout the year.

Two major construction projects in Amsterdam (Noord/Zuidlijn and Stationseiland) share an Information Centre. All your questions about the construction of the Noord/Zuidlijn and the building activities on Stationseiland will be answered as you wander through the building. Free entrance.

Exhibition

You can find all kinds of information about the building activities for the Noord/Zuidlijn and on Stationseiland in the Information Centre. There is a wall covered with information describing the various construction methods that are being used for the Noord/Zuidlijn. A scale model of Stationseiland shows in great detail just how the area will look when it is finished. A variety of artists’ impressions will give you an idea of what the stations of the Noord/Zuidlijn and the renewed IJ side of Stationseiland will look like. Vintage photographs will remind you that there have always been construction projects in Amsterdam. There’s a reading table where you can browse through the latest news, but also a spectacular scale model of the Noord/Zuidlijn. And of course you are welcome to ask the Information Centre staff any questions you might have.

Temporary exhibits
The Information Centre will have temporary exhibits on a regular basis, such as the series ‘Kusjes’ [Kisses] by artist Peter Doeswijk and exhibits of photos and art.

These are just a few of the things that you can see at the Information Centre. It is clearly well worth a visit!

New in the Information Centre at Stationsplein 7: Archaeology

In 2005 and 2006, archaeologists from the Amsterdam Municipal Department for the Preservation and Restoration of Historic Buildings and Sites (bMA) set to work while two caissons (tunnel elements) were being sunk into the water of the Damrak. They discovered an enormous number of things that can tell us more about what went on at this busy site in Amsterdam in past centuries. The sand and clay were carried off through a special sifting installation to be investigated. This method turned out to be extraordinarily effective and resulted in some 700 (bin-liner size) bags of bulk finds. A small selection of these special discoveries can now be seen in the Information Centre. During the sinking of the caissons, the archaeologists made photos of the soil. A profile of the soil of the Damrak to a depth of 14 metres below Normal Amsterdam Water Level (NAP) is shown on a unique photo mount over three metres long at Stationsplein 7.

Guided tours

We are happy to give guided tours in the Information Centre at Stationsplein 7. The fascinating programme lasts about 1.5 hours. Films, scale models and a stroll past the building activities on Stationseiland will give you a look behind the scenes of the construction of the new metro line. As it is not possible to enter the construction sites, you will not need any special clothing or shoes.

Guided tours by appointment
During the week we offer guided tours to groups by appointment. A maximum of 25 people can take part per group, and the tours start at 10:15 am, 1 pm and 3 pm. You can reserve a place in a tour by telephone, by e-mail or at the reception desk in the Information Centre.

It is also possible to have a customised guided tour that will go into more depth on a certain topic. Please contact one of the information officers to discuss the possibilities.

Sunday tours
On Sundays there are tours of the Information Centre that you can join without having a reservation. These tours are given at 11:30 am and 2 pm. On the first Sunday of the month, these tours will also go outside. As the number of places is limited, you might want to make a reservation anyway. You can reserve a place by telephone, by e-mail or at the reception desk in the Information Centre.

Bicycle routes

You can also get the routes for two different bicycle tours at the Information Centre. One of these tours will lead you through Amsterdam-Noord along the Noordhollands Kanaal, through the green of the park and of course past the construction sites for the Noord/Zuidlijn. The other bicycle tour follows the route of the existing metro for a while starting from Zuid Station and leads you past sites where work is currently being done on the Noord/Zuidlijn. In addition to the map for each route, there is also text with information about all the interesting places you will be riding past. Obviously the construction sites will be among those places, but many other special locations and buildings are described as well.

You can pick up a copy of these free bike tours at the reception desk in the Information Centre.

Evening programmes

Every three months, the Information Centre at Stationsplein 7 organises an evening programme with special attention being given to a certain topic.

The evening programme begins at 5.30 pm and lasts until about 8 pm. Entrance is free, of course. The number of places is limited, so it would be a good idea to make a reservation.

For children

De Kinderlijn (The Kid’s Line)
Mo and Blub, two gnomes who live in the ground in Amsterdam-Zuid, want to visit their cousins in Amsterdam-Noord. But that is a long way to tunnel for two little gnomes! But now they have heard that a solution is coming. By joining Mo and Blub on a hunt through the entire Information Centre, kids can find out what the solution is.

WetenWeek (ScienceWeek)
Just as in previous years, the Information Centre at Stationsplein 7 also took part in this year’s national WetenWeek. This year, WetenWeek was held from 18 through 25 October and the theme was ‘Use Your Energy’. Throughout the week, kids could do all kinds of quizzes at the Information Centre that had to do with construction activities. They had to use all their energy to come up with the right answers!

Guided tours for elementary schoolchildren
The Information Centre also offers special tours for pupils from grades 6, 7 and 8. The pupils are given a brief explanation about various construction projects and then have to set about trying to find the answers to all kinds of questions. Most of the answers can be found in the exhibition, but sometimes the pupils will have to think logically on their own to draw the right conclusions.
