The Noord/Zuidlijn will go a long way towards relieving the aboveground public transportation network. According to calculations, some 200,000 passengers will be making use of the new metro line.
The Noord/Zuidlijn will increase the accessibility of the city centre. It will bring about a fast connection between Amsterdam-Noord, the city centre and Amsterdam-Zuid.
If the new metro line were extended further into the region (to places like Schiphol Airport, Purmerend and Zaanstad), the number of passengers would rise to 300,000 a day. The Noord/Zuidlijn clearly fits in with the national policy to provide the Amsterdam area with an alternative to the rapidly increase in automobile traffic.
During the day, the new metro line will run every five minutes – and during rush hour even every four minutes. The trip from the north to the south of the city currently takes 31 minutes. With the Noord/Zuidlijn, the length of that ride will have been cut in half to 16 minutes.
