12,500 passengers, one entrance The Noord/Zuidlijn starts out in Amsterdam-Noord and runs south beneath the IJ. Before it goes underground, it will pass two surface-level stations in Amsterdam-Noord: Buikslotermeerplein Station and Johan van Hasseltweg Station. Johan van Hasseltweg Station will be the second station in the central reserve of Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg. There will be a single entrance on the side of the Johan van Hasseltweg Viaduct. With an expected 12,500 passengers per day, this will be the least busy station of the Noord/Zuidlijn. Nearby the station there will be room for new offices, schools and cafés and restaurants, all of which will be easy to reach thanks to the new metro line.
Current developments in construction of Johan van Hasseltweg Station Concrete piles are being driven for the foundation of the new viaduct. Building activities are also taking place at street level, and concrete is being poured for descending ramps for the metro tracks. No more reversible lane on Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg As of Thursday, 17 May 2007, there is no longer a reversible lane on Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg. The reversible lane had been in use since September 2005 as a way of reducing congestion during the morning and evening rush hours. The reversible lane created a major obstacle to the progress of the building activities on the Noord/Zuidlijn, however, since it ran right through the Noord/Zuidlijn work area. As an experiment, the reversible lane was closed for two weeks. The results of that experiment led to the conclusion that closing that lane would not cause any additional traffic delays. For that reason, it was decided to cancel the reversible lane. Temporary bridges over Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg The existing Johan van Hasseltweg Viaduct crossing Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg has been removed completely and an entirely new viaduct is being built at the same location. Johan van Hasseltweg Station will be part of that new viaduct. To enable the traffic on Johan van Hasseltweg to keep flowing over Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg during the demolition, temporary bridges have been built, one to the north and one to the south of the current Meeuwenei. Alongside these there is also a temporary bridge for pedestrians. The temporary bridges have been open for use since May 2006. Further up in Amsterdam-Noord In the cofferdam along the Noordhollands Kanaal, some 1600 concrete piles are being driven for the foundation of the metro tunnel. The contractor is working from north to south and is currently still north of the Wagenaarbrug.
