The Noord/Zuidlijn will be 9.7 km long, and the metro will stop at eight stations. The average distance between the stations will be 1.2 km. The line will begin aboveground at Buikslotermeerplein Station in Amsterdam-Noord. From there, it will proceed at a gradually lower level until after Johan van Hasseltweg Station, when it will go completely underground and continue beneath the water of the IJ River. After that, it will run beneath the historic city centre and the district to the south known as De Pijp. The underground part of the route will comprise 7.1 km, including 3.8 km of bored tunnel. The line will only resurface again in the central reserve of the A10 ring way between Europaplein Station and Zuid Station. There, the Noord/Zuidlijn will join the existing network of trains, buses, trams and the existing metro line.
